1)- The four-year civil war, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, was fought between the Southern and Northern states, and it started when Confederate forces bombed Sumter Castle in Charleston Bay.
2)- In the middle of the 19th century, the use of slaves as farm workers, servants, and craftsmen intensified in the Southern states. Differences in trade, customs duties, and state rights, as well as the rise of slavery, were the underlying problems of the war.
3)- Eleven states left the United States and formed the Confederate States of America: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
4)- At the beginning of the Civil War, 22 million lived in the North and 9 million (about 4 million slaves) in the South. Also, the North had more money, more factories, more horses, more railroads, and more farmland. This made the United States more advantageous.
5)- The bloodiest battle of the war was the Battle of Pennsylvania-Gettysburg. It was a three-day war that resulted in about 51,000 killed, wounded, or lost in action President Lincoln traveled to Pennsylvania and delivered the Gettysburg Address, which has become one of the most iconic speeches in American history.
6)- In the first few battles, neither side had military clothing. This made it difficult to detect the enemy for both sides. Later, the United States began wearing dark blue uniforms and Confederate began wearing gray coats and pants.
7)- Because they were hunting, most Southern men already knew how to use guns. On the other hand, Northern men were factory workers, and most of them didn’t know how to fire a gun.
8)- At the beginning of the war, the value of manufactured goods produced in all Confederate states accounted for less than a quarter of those produced in New York State alone.
9)- Senator John J. Crittendon of Kentucky had two sons. During the Civil War his son John Crittendon was a great general in the Northern states and his son George Crittendon was a great general on the Southern Front. Two brothers fought each other on opposite fronts.
10)- 2% of the population died in the war; it was more than 620,000 people it is estimated. However, diseases were the biggest killer in the war. 66% of the casualties were from diseases.
